On May 26, 2025, Mumbai experienced a severe cloudburst with 104 mm of rainfall recorded in just one hour (between 9AM and 10AM) at Nariman Point, a central location in south Mumbai.
This intense raifall event has had widerspread impact on transportation, healthcare services and public safety. Prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Brihabmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) tp issue urgent warnings and mobilize emergency responses.
Transport Disruption
Local train Services: Train on the central, western and harbour lines, were delayed by 30 to 60 minutes. Waterlogging on tracks near Chargegate and CSTM severaly hampered movement.
Bus Services: Several BEST bus routes were diverted. Road in Dadar, parel, Sion and Byculla were submerged, leading to tarffic jams and standed passengers.
Air Trafiic: Flights at Mumbai Airport were temporarily delayed due to low visibility and runway water accumulation.

Why did the Monsoon Arrive Early
Low-pressure system over both the Arbian Sea and Bay of Bengal intensified early, boosting monsoon winds. These system pulled moist air inland faster, triggering early rainfall. Sea surface temperature in the India Ocean and Arbian sea were above avrage aiding the monsoon current.
Accelerated Cross-Equatorial flow
The smali jet (a strong low level monsoon jet) developed earlier and stronger than useful this drove moisture-laden winds toward the indian west coast quickly
Short-term Outlook: IMD forcasts continued heavy rainfall in Mumbai till May 29. Red alert downgraded to Orange post May 28.
Long-term Implication: Authorities are now re-evaluation monsoon preparedness calendars. City drainage infrastructue under scrutiny: Current capacity often under sudden intese downpours.
