Who is Jyoti Malhotra?
1. She is a 33 years old and resident of Hisar, Haryana.
2. She is a popular travel vlogger on youtube. Her Channel " Travel with Jo" had over 3.7 lakh Subscribers.
3. She posted travel vlogs across india and abroad, building a significant follower base with scenic contant and intractive experience.
Why Was She Arrested?
Jyoti Malhotra arrested on 17 may 2025, by civil police in Hisar under.
1. Section 3,4,5 of the official Secrets Act, 1923 (pertaining to espionage , possession and communication of sensitive information).
2. Section 152 of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) India's new criminal code that replaced IPC.
She is accused of passing sensitive information to pakistan intelligence agents.
Contacts:-
1. Jyoti came in contact with a man named Danish, an official in the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi, during a visa process in early 2023.
2. Danish, later declared persona non grata and expelled by India on 13 may 2025, is suspected to have been a Pakistan ISI (I nter Services Intelligence) handler.
3. Danish introduced Jyoti to other Pakistani operatives, some of whom were former military personnel.
Visits to Pakistan
1. She traved to Pakistan twice in 2023, as part of her travel vlogging.
2. During visit, she met
• Ali Ehwan
• Shakir alias Rana Shahbaz
• Several ISI linked handlers
Espionage Activities
1. She captured photos and videos of sensitive Indian military and border infrastructure.
2. Gathered statgic information about Indian border areas, routes and survalliance patterns.
3. Shared this data via Whatsapp, Telegram and Snapchat using encyped communication and alias named contacts.
4. She received monetary compensation and tavel perks in exchange for her information.
5. She stored Pakistani agents contacts under fake names such as " Arun Bhai" and "Nazia Di".
Investigation
Currently under five day police remand for interrogation, Digital Forensic recovery of data from phones and laptops, Verification of money trail. And her devices reportedly contain chats, documents and geotagged photos sent to Pakistani operatives.
Apart from Jyoti another key accused in Guzala, a 32 years old from Malerkotla, Panjab. She was visited the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi on 27 feb 2025 to apply for a visa.
There she met Danish and began taking to him regularly. Danish soon persuaded her to switch from Whatsapp to Telegram claiming it was safer. He gained her trust by promising marriage, initiating a romantic relationship through chats and video calls.
Misuse of Social Media
1. Jyoti's influencer status made it easier to move across borders and gather visual contant without suspicion. And highlight how social media influencers can be exploited for intelligence gathering under the guide of tourism.
2. Non traditional espionage tactics by Pakistan using cicilians and online platforms. It shows deeping infiltration tactics and the use of honeytrapes, cyber messaging and financial inducements.
3. Misusing Freedom of Speech.
Government and Intelligence Community Response
1. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is coordinating with the ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to investigate Pakistan High Commission links.
2. The Indian Army and BSF have repotedly increased vigilance along sectors where jyoti had traveled recently.
3. Jyoti arrest coincides with a wider post Operation Sindoor cracdown on foreign linked influence operations.
