Who is Ashoka University Professor?
Ali Khan Mahmudabad, an Associated Professor and Head of the Department of Political Science and History at Ashoka University, was arrested on May 18, 2025 in New Delhi.
Over controversial remarks made on social media regarding Operation Sindoor India's recent military strike on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
The arrest has since triggered intense national debate on academic freedom, freedom of expression and the role of dissent in a democracy.
Operation Sindoor was a highly publicized Indian military operation launched in April 2025 trgeting cross-border terror infrastructure. It garnered nationalistic sentiment and wide media coverage, particularly celebrating the presence of female Officers like Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, who led key briefing Ali Khan Mahmudabad posted a critical commentary on X (formerly Twitter) regarding the "optics" of female representation in military leadership, glorification of war and need for representation to translate into real protections for minorities and marginalized groups.
In one of the two social media posts on May 8, Ali had highlighted the 'irony' of right wing commentators praising Colonel Sofia Qureshi, who had represented the Army during media briefing about Indian military operations against terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
In the post, Ali had called out 'blind bloodlust for war' and raised concerns over the human cost of armed conflict while stressing that the optics of two women soldiers presenting their findings after India's military action was important but optics must translate to reality on the ground otherwise it's just hypocrisy.
The arrest was reportedly prompted by complaints from the Haryana State Commission for Women and formal complaint by a BJP Yuva Morcha leader.
They alleged that his posts were disparaging toward women in the armed forces, he was promoting enmity and communal disharmony under Section 152 and his statements amounted to Anti-national rhetoric especially in wartime context.

2. Section 353 statements conducting to public mischief.
3. Section IT Act Sec. 66A sending offensive messages online.
Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on monday listed the arrest of Ashoka University Professor. Ali Khan Mahmudabad hearing on tuesday, after the matter was mentioned before the Supreme Court for urgent consideration.
Appearing on behalf of Mahmudabad, senior advocate Kapil Sibal that the professor was arrested for an entirely statement on Operation Sindoor.
Seeking his immediate release, Muhmudabad's counsel appoached the Supreme Court, saying that his arrest violates his fundamental right to freedom of speech and expession. Further, Sibal argued that the FIR was filed without any sufficient cause.
