Indian Students Future In Danger: Trump Bans Harvard From Admiting Foreign Students

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under the Trump administration revoked Harvard's certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) on May 22, 2025. This action effectively bars the university from enrolling new international students and complicates the legal status of its current international students population.

The DHS acted by revoking Harvard's SEVP certification, a mandatory credential that enables U.S. institutions to issue Form I-20, which international students use to apply for F-1 or M-1 student visas. Without SEVP certification, harvard cannot sponser or admit any new international students. This includes undergraduate, graduate and professional programs.

Non-compliance with federal records request
Alleged that Harvard failed to provide detailed student records when requested by immigration enforcement and intelligence agencies.

Antisemitism on Campus
Accused Harvard of not adequetly addressing antisemtric incidents a criticism that has been politicaly charged in recent month amidst ongoing campus protests over the Gaza war.

Link with China
Claimed Harvard had ongoing collaboration with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), referencing its partnership with Chinese scholars and research institutions raising concerns of intellectual property theft and espionage.

Political Messaging
Noem emphasized that hosting foreign students is a privilage, not a right, framing the decision as a warning to other universities to align with American values.

Impact on Students and Harvard
This decision affects approx 6800 international students (approx 27% of Harvard's student body) also uncertainity about visa status, risk deportation, need to transfer to another SEVP-certified institution and loss of academic continuity and financial hardship. Its also impact on Harvard all future international admissions, damage reputation and global standing and impairs ongoing international research collborations.

Hardvard's Response
Denounced the move as unlawful, politically motivated and a violation of academic freedom and Announced plans to Challenge the decision in federal court, provide legal aid, housing and academic guidence for affected students and lobby Congress and public opinion against the administration move.

Reactions
Strong condemnation from other universities like Yale, Stanford, MIT and public institution. It seen as a board assault on U.S. higher education's global leadership.

Argue that the action violates due process and lacks precedent and some question the consititutionality of revoking SEVP based on vague allegations without a transparent investigation.

Organizations like the ACLU claim the move is part of a broader authoritarian, reminiscent of earlier Trump-era visa bans.

Economic and Diplomatic Repercussions
U.S. higher education contributes $44 billion annually from international students and this decision threatens this revenue, may push talented students to Canada, UK or Australia, risks academic brain drain and it could strain U.S. diplomatic ties with countries whose students are affected.
