The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of India has issued a significant directive mandating a 30 day deadline for the verification of credentials of suspected illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar, especially those claiming Indian citizenship.
This marks a new phase in India's internal security and immigration policy.
India faces complex migration dynamics due to its porous borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar, compounded by the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, causing refusee flows into northeastern and eastern India.
Economic migration from Bangladesh into India over several decades. Ethnic and communal sensitivities in border states like Assam, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram. These trends have led to concerns about demographic changes, national security, resource pressure and the misuse of govenment welfare scheme.
MHA Key Highlights
All States and Union Territories (UTs) must verify the authenticity of documents of suspected illegal immigrans within 30 days. If an individual fails to prove Indian citizenship, they will bw declared illegal immigrants and becomes eligible for deportation.
Each Distriict must establish or designate detention centers for the temporary holding of illegal immigrants until they are deported. These centres must follow basic humanitarian under Supreme Court guidelines.
District Level Task Forces
Special district-level task forces (headed by police) will identify illegal immigrants, investigate their documents and status and initiate legal proceedings and deportation.
Monthly Reporting
States must submit a monthly report to the MHA by the 15th of every month. Report should include number of individual verified, number of deportation initiated and those handed over to border forces or coast guard.
Integration with National Databases
Once an individual is declared an illegal immigrant their details will be uploaded on a central deportee portal and shared with UIDAI (Aadhar), Election Commission (voter IDs) and Ministry of External Affairs (passports). These ensures deactivation of IDs and prevents misuse of welfare schemes or future re-entry.
State Wise Actions
Rajasthan: Recently deported 148 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants via West Bengal.
Gujrat: Detained 6500 Bangladeshi living in Surat and Ahemdabad.
Mizoram: Plans to biometrically register 33000 Myanmar refugees, mainly Chin/Zomi communities. Earlier, these were not being documented properly due to a technical flaw in the portal designed only for deportation not for asylum or displaced persons.
Diplomatic & Geopolitical Implications
Bangladesh: While India claims Deportation is necessary for security Bangladesh often denied accepting returnees unless verified on its own terms. Previous deportation attempts (Assam NRC cases) faced diplomatic resistance.
Myanmar
Miliatry rule and internal conflict in Myanmar complicate repatriation of Rohyngya refugees. India fears being overwhelmed by unverified inflows due to Myanmar's instability.
